Each company you work with for disposal of junk will have different policies. It’s crucially important to understand them in order to do the best you can to support the environment.
However, in this list we are going to go over everything you can and everything you can’t recycle.
Things That Can Be Recycled
If you want some general guidelines about what you can and can not recycle, here is a simple list. In general:
- You can recycle all clean glass, bottles, and paper
- Items need to be clean and free of food, dirt and debris
- Do not throw plastic bags in with other items for recycling
List Of Items That Can Be Recycled
Plastics– Plastics made of rigid materials can generally be recycled. Be sure to give them a good rinse beforehand, as you can not recycle food contaminated plastics.
Bottles– Common glass bottles such as wine bottles and other ones can also be recycled.
Paper- You can recycle paper products such as notepaper, printed paper, newspaper and other paper items. In addition, phone directories, mail (given that it does not have any credit card or bank account information) and magazines can also be recycled.
Cardboard– You can recycle cardboard items safely as well. Cardboard items such as boxes, cereal boxes, tissue boxes, and other clean cardboard boxes should be packaged together and recycled.
Aluminum cans- Aluminum cans such as soda cans and beer cans can definitely be recycled but should be rinsed out beforehand.
Metal scraps– Metals such as tin, steel and aluminum can also be recycled. But be sure to contact a professional for scrap metal pickup as you do not want to handle metal scraps yourself.
Glass items– Glass items such as soda, wine, liquor and beer bottles, jars, and other items made of glass can be recycled. Be aware, glass should be properly cleaned before placing it in the recycling bin.
List of Items That Can’t Be Recycled
Some plastic items– Some plastic items such as plastic baggies, plastic bags you might find at that grocery store and other soft plastics can’t be recycled. Additionally, cling wrap can not be recycled.
Styrofoam– Styrofoam can not be recycled. It is extremely hazardous to the environment, in fact and should be avoided whenever possible. Items made of Styrofoam include:
- Takeout containers
- Egg cartons
- Other containers
- Packing materials and fillers
Soiled containers– Soiled containers can not be recycled, even if they are technically made of recyclable materials. If you have recyclable materials and containers that should be recycled and that are soiled, you should clean them. Wash them out and clean them thoroughly so that these items don’t clog up our landfills.
Broken glass– Broken glass and sharp, dangerous objects should not be sent to be recycled.
Fast food containers and packaging– Fast food containers and packaging are not to be recycled. Additionally, they are most likely dirty and shouldn’t be put in the recycling bin.
